This story is written for
children however, any adult would be able to use Charlie’s training
technique to teach their own dogs basic obedience commands.
Considering the outcry for the new laws against pets, sometimes
banning specific breeds within city limits, this e-booklet is intended
to help future trainers achieve the goal of owing a CANINE GOOD
CITIZEN. This book is intended for its simplicity in teaching several
obedience commands and fun tricks to your new puppy or older dog.
The fictional dog is based on my American &
Canadian CH Irish’s Whispering NorthWind UD SH CGC. This story
is inspired by my experience with basic obedience training. Reed has
earned the American Kennel Clubs Certificate of Canine Good Citizen.

Chapter
1
"Charlie,
with his Mom and Dad lived in an apartment in the city. The city
streets were noisy and always full of people and cars that could only
spell danger to those who weren’t careful and this included puppies.
Charlie had been asking his Mom and Dad for a puppy forever. It sure
seemed like it had been forever! Charlie’s Dad would tell him that
they didn’t have room in their apartment for a puppy and that the
city was no place to raise a dog.
“There
is no room for a dog to run and get exercise,” his Dad would say.
“Charlie, it wouldn’t be fair to the dog and he may howl and
disturb the neighbors,” his Mom would add. “Charlie, someday our
lifestyle may change and then you can have a puppy,” promised
Charlie’s Dad.
Charlie,
being the smart young boy that he was, began looking to the
future. He started to prepare himself, looking to that one day he had
been wishing for. He did this by contacting his local pet shop to find
out if there were any dog obedience classes near his home. Why would
Charlie want to know about these obedience classes, even before he got
his puppy?
Well,
Charlie is a very smart young boy and knew that he could show his
parents that when the special day would come, he would be ready to
train his puppy. He also knew that by watching and speaking with an
experienced dog training instructor and watching a class full of
students training their dogs, he would be able to ask questions about
the commands that were being taught to the dogs.
So
Charlie went to the class and watched with interest. After the class
was over, Charlie spoke with the instructor and she told Charlie, that
he was a very smart young man to want to learn about training his
puppy before he even had one. The instructor told Charlie to go to the
library and read as many books as he could about obedience training.
She gave him a list of books to read. The instructor also told Charlie
to get on the internet, to speak with a veterinarian and to speak with
some of her students to learn more about training a puppy.
Did
Charlie go to the library? Do you think he got on the internet? And
was Charlie smart enough to speak with his local veterinarian? You bet
he did all those things. Why? Because someday his dream may come
true..."
